CATHERINE MAIZE: INTIMATE MOMENTS
The Paul Thiebaud Gallery is pleased to present Catherine Maize: Intimate Moments, an exhibition of recent paintings by Catherine Maize, on view from May 2 through June 24, 2023. Based in Great Lakes, Michigan since the 1980s, Maize is a master of intimate still life paintings. She turns to her surroundings for inspiration, finding simplicity in ceramic vessels, fruits, flowers, and chairs. Majority of her works are smaller than 10 x 10 inches, offering a feeling of intimacy for the viewer.
Employing a subtle color palette and a keen sense of space and light, Maize renders works that are poised between realism and abstraction. She explains her ambitions to be an abstract painter, “To me, the paintings are never about subject matter and that is a strict rule I try to follow. It is always about the composition which means light, color, and form.” The composition is carefully considered: each object a character, posed and set up in relation to the others. Very sensitive to light and shadow, she believes that edges and negative space are sacred. Within this new body of work, Maize adds a heightened dimension of depth, transparency, and reflection in her practice.
Maize received her MFA at Indiana University and has studied at Art Institute of Chicago, Yale School of Art, and The New York Studio School.
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, open to the public.
