Isola Tiberina, 2025
oil on canvas
24 x 36 in.
Paul Thiebaud Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Jeff Bellerose: A Sense of Place on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 3-5pm, with an artist talk at 3:30pm. On view will be 16 paintings, a pair of monoprints, and a selection of the artist’s sketchbooks all inspired by Bellerose’s 2025 trip to Italy, the Czech Republic, France, and his return through New York and Boston. Enamored with the architectural geometries and juxtapositions of urban city-scapes, Bellerose employs light, color, and perspective to heighten our experience of the world around us. The exhibition will be on view through March 14, 2026.
An inveterate traveler, Jeff Bellerose has made a habit of visiting Europe, and in particular Italy, for the past several years. His most recent trip included an extended stay in Rome, as well as visits to Venice and Sardinia. On his daily walks with his watercolors and sketchbooks, three of which are being shown for the first time, Bellerose will stop and paint for a few minutes when he comes upon a scene that captures his eye. Sometimes this happens more than once on a walk, other times not at all. On returning to his studio, Bellerose will then flip through their pages and set out to render the scenes that captivated him the most in oil on either canvas or panel. Among those included in the exhibition are views of the Roman Forum, bridges across the Tiber River, the Piazza Navona, and the Grand Canal of Venice. Bellerose will also sometimes explore depicting the scenes in his sketchbooks through the medium of oil-based monoprinting. Two views of the Roman Forum are featured in the exhibition using this method.
After leaving Italy, Bellerose’s travels through Europe took him to the Czech Republic and France last year, as can be seen in Beams and Prague Roof Skyline (both 2025). On his way back to the Bay Area, Bellerose stopped for a few weeks in New York and Boston to visit his family, and from which works like Crossing and Hudson River (both 2025) emerged. Throughout his paintings, drawings, and monoprints, Jeff Bellerose’s attention to the dramatic play of light across land and cityscapes is a consistent throughline. Combined with his use of color and brushstrokes, the results are physically beautiful, visually evocative works that draw the viewer in and seduce them to explore their nuanced surfaces.
Born and raised in Boston, MA, to a family of artists – his mother is a watercolorist and his father is a professional illustrator – for Jeff Bellerose art has been a lifelong pursuit. Bellerose attended Tufts University and earned a B.S. in Physics and Mechanical Engineering. His paintings have been exhibited extensively across the United States and can be found in numerous private collections. This is Jeff Bellerose's sixth solo exhibition with Paul Thiebaud Gallery.
