Paul Thiebaud Gallery and St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery are pleased to present Kim Frohsin: Symbols and Figures with Stories opening Friday, June 26, 2026 from 4 to 6 pm at St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery in Rutherford, California. On view will be Kim Frohsin’s paintings spanning over two decades and from three distinct series: Figurative Paintings from the 1990s, Cautionary Tales and Portraits of Numbers, highlighting Frohsin’s indelible mark in her exploration as a visual artist.
Kim Frohsin's distinctive body of work occupies a singular position within contemporary American painting. A third-generation Bay Area Figurative painter, Frohsin has spent decades expanding the possibilities of figuration through a highly personal visual language that combines portraiture, symbolism, geometry, and an extraordinary command of color. Distinctive and authentic to her own form of expression, Frohsin gives the human figure a sensibility and psychological depth that sets her work apart from traditional portraiture.
In recent years, Frohsin further evolved her practice through an inventive series of paintings devoted to the portraiture of numbers. Transforming numerical forms into compelling protagonists, she imbues familiar symbols with personality and narrative presence. Alongside these works, Frohsin’s series of cautionary tales are expressed through geometric and color forward multimedia panels. Employing layered materials and vibrant palettes, these works explore themes of perception and contemporary life. Whether the geometric forms morph into numbers or everyday symbols, they function as visual metaphors.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Frohsin studied at l’Institut pour les Etudiants Etrangers in Aix-en-Provence, France, and San Diego State University, where she earned a BA in Humanities and French and in 1988, she earned a BFA from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. Froshin has received numerous awards and honors throughout career, including nominations for the 2014 Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship Grant, the 2013 Fleishhacker Foundation Eureka Fellowship, and the 1995 SECA Award at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Kim Frohsin’s works can be found in numerous private, corporate, and public collections, including the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA; San José Museum of Art, San José, CA; Monterey Museum of Art, Monterey, CA; Langson Orange County Museum of Art at UC Irvine, Irvine, CA; and the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art, Bentonville, AR, among others. This is Kim Frohsin’s fifth exhibition with Paul Thiebaud Gallery.
