I paint directly from observation of life. Sometimes, that may be in a field, on a beach, at a farm, with a dog, with a cow, or overlooking a city street corner through an open window. What fascinates me are the abstract qualities hovering just beneath the surface of what is right in front of me. The challenge is bringing the representational and the abstract sides into balance, so that one does not overtake the other. I aim for what is essential, and hope to capture the fleeting weather, light, and movement of the everyday. Working on location allows me to be part of the world that I’m painting while it unfolds around me. It takes time to slowly learn the order of things, and to better understand the relationships within the scene, which is always full of life. I try to bring that sense of the experience into my paintings.
"When I am in nature, I marvel at how surreal it all is."
