JEFF BELLEROSE: CITY FORMS
The Paul Thiebaud Gallery is pleased to present City Forms, an exhibition of recent paintings by Jeff Bellerose, on view from February 28 through April 22, 2023. This show marks Bellerose’s fourth solo exhibition at the gallery, featuring his most recent body of work created since 2019. Raised in Boston with a family of artists—his mother a watercolorist and father a professional illustrator—art remains a lifelong pursuit.
Bellerose explains he aims to capture moments, moods, and atmospheres from his daily life: from the interior of his childhood home outside of Boston to the architectural facades in Southern Italy. He travels with a sketchbook and watercolors, often capturing the geometry and color of a scene in situ.
Bellerose’s academic background studying physics and mechanical engineering at Tufts University is apparent in his paintings, due to their sensitivity to geometry, lines, and contrast. The exhibition features 36 paintings including cityscapes, interiors, as well as a new meditative series on waves. The waves featured are often those found on Martha’s Vineyard, where he and his family have vacationed since his childhood, as well as those at Ocean Beach, near his home in Oakland, California. As fellow artist Raimonds Staprans remarks, “Be it cityscapes or interiors, an overall feeling of nostalgia pervades Bellerose’s canvasses presenting to the viewer a world at peace with itself.”
