Paul Thiebaud Gallery is pleased to present Åsa Schick: Echoes of Elsewhere opening Saturday, July 11, 2026 from 2 to 5 pm. On view will be eleven oil paintings on linen and canvas representing a new body of work reflecting Schick’s ongoing exploration of the spiritual as an embodied, visual experience.
Rooted in meditative studio practice, this series of paintings traces a dialogue between motion and structure, where form emerges gradually through layered abstractions, geometry and intuitive mark-marking rather than being predetermined. To begin the process, Schick selected unstretched linen and canvas as a means of further providing flexibility in how she could move the paint, whether the support material was mounted to a studio wall or on the ground, opening each work to discovery.
With free-forming gestures and shifts, the composition guides Schick in creating a synergy between color, form and rhythm. Color is integral to the paintings with each brush of pinks, purples, blues, yellows and oranges suffusing a harmonious balance of light.
Reflecting on Echoes of Elsewhere, Schick notes, “Each painting develops as a kind of choreography - an active exchange between movement, form, and space - where an underlying architecture gradually reveals itself. Color is central to my practice - both materially and spiritually.”
Born in Sweden, Åsa Schick received a BA from the University of Southern California and an MFA from the New York Studio School of Drawing Painting and Sculpture in 2011. She also has a MA in Psychology from Antioch University. Schick has exhibited in the United States and internationally. Her work is held in public and private collections, including the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation in New York, the Fantapia Museum in South Korea and in the corporate collection of LEKAB Communications in Sweden.
